I here are a few days in Mexico were celebrating the dead ... Nothing to do with our Saints! This festival takes place over two days on 1 and 2 November.
The feast of the dead has been practiced for over 3000 years in Mexico and traced back to the Aztecs. The first day of celebration is dedicated to dead children and the second for adults, because Mexicans believe the souls of children return at the November 1, then those of adults the following day.
Traditionally, Mexicans will visit the graves of their loved ones, clean them, decorate them and deposit gifts. On this occasion, we make a sweet bread called Pan de muertos (bread of the dead) who can take various forms and typical forms such as skulls or bones.
As in Celtic culture, Mexico, death does not frighten. At the end of the day, Mexicans come together and celebrate entire life in streams of tequila and mariachi sound!
The children meanwhile are also knocking on doors asking for some treats, like Halloween.
Also note that the celebration del Dia de los Muertos is the "Heritage of Humanity since 2003.
